Historical Development of Reconstructive Surgery in Laryngeal Carcinoma

Abstract

Partial resection of the larynx was developed about 100 years ago, particularly in France and Italy. Since the mutilating operation of total laryngectomy was regarded as intolerable for the patient, partial laryngectomy was preferred. At that time, partial resection could only be justified in tumors of limited extent, especially since the radicality of the excision would have suffered. In addition, appreciable disturbances of air passage and deglutition with potentially fatal aspiration pneumonia would have occurred without reconstruction in resection of larger tumors.
