Abstract

Pulmonary surfactant is the surface tension lowering material which lines the lung alveoli and prevents their collapse on expiration. Its existence was first postulated on theoretical grounds by von Neergard (1929), but it was not actually demonstrated until some 30 years later when Pattle (1955) found that remarkably stable bubbles were expressed from a lung cut under water and Clements (1957) showed that lung extracts lowered surface tension at an air-water interface.
