The Pulmonary Mixed-Function Oxidase System

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 75))

Abstract

In 1974 Tierney wrote: “In terms of phylogeny, the lung is a relatively new organ, but it has been in existence longer than have biochemists and physiologists. Why, then, have its metabolism and biochemistry been ignored until recently?” Since then, considerable progress has been made in our knowledge of basic lung biochemistry, including the pulmonary mixed-function oxidase or monooxygenase system. Much of this recent research has been spurred by the need to identify and quantify the pulmonary effects of a variety of inhaled toxic pollutants and synthetic pneumotoxins.
