Will man die Bedeutung des künstlichen Gelenkersatzes, des wesentlichsten und zugleich faszinierendsten Fortschritts der Gelenkchirurgie, so recht erfassen, scheint es notwendig, einen Blick auf die Problematik zu werfen, vor der die alten Chirurgen um die Jahrhundertwende standen und deren Lösung sie betrieben.
