Die äußere Form der Hypophyse variiert deutlich. Es wurden ein länglicher; ein abgerundeter oder abgeplatteter und ein rundlicher Typ unterschieden. Das Gewicht beträgt beim Mann zwischen 500 und 650 mg und bei der Frau zwischen 600 und 800 mg.
