Abstract
Profound respiratory depression has been reported by several authors after intrathecal morphine. To determine if these usually delayed accidents could be prevented, we investigated the C02 -response curves in two groups of patients. Capnographic monitoring was carried out in group 1, which consisted of seven postoperative patients who each received 5 mg morphine intrathecally. These patients were held in a 30° head-up position until termination of analgesia. Group 2 consisted of six postoperative patients who received 2 mg morphine intrathecally. These patients were positioned with the head up at 30° for 3 h then lowered to the supine position for 1 h.
