Reproductive Structures of the Flowering Plants

Abstract

Two new textbooks in German on reproductive structures of angiosperms have appeared, the first and more extensive by WEBERLING (1981), the second with a contribution by ROHWEDER (1982). This is an important event, since no such works have been published for years. In the treatment of the flower each work concentrates in its scope on a special but different topic. WEBERLING stresses the comparative morphology of the flower at anthesis (and shortly before anthesis), ROHWEDER the initiation and early development of the floral organs. In this respect they complement each other well. In both works more functional considerations (e.g., pollination and dispersal biology in correlation with flower structure as well as fruit morphology) are only briefly given in auxiliary sections. Very welcome is also a main section on inflorescences in WEBERLING’S book, where TROLL’S concepts are demonstrated for the first time in a comprehensive and concise manner. Both works will be valuable aids for students of reproductive structures.
