Abstract

In a series of refreshingly provocative articles TREWAVAS (1981, 1982 and references cited therein; see also Progr. Bot. 44, 189) has challenged the classical concept of growth substances as hormones, which are limiting factors in plant growth and differentiation. TREWAVAS contends that growth substance sensitivity, rather than concentration, represents the limiting factor in plant development. In molecular terms, sensitivity variation would be brought about by changes in receptor concentration (or accessibility). Since the recognition and characterization of plant hormone receptors is, at best, in its infancy (Progr. Bot. 44, 188), molecular approaches to sensitivity hardly exist at all, and its quantitative assessment by biological methods will hardly be unequivocal. The two concepts need not necessarily be opposed to each other: why should not growth-substance concentration and growth-substance sensitivity operate in concert? Fortunately, an increasing range of highly sensitive and selective immunological assays is available (WEILER 1982) which will permit the analysis of quantitative changes of growth-substance concentrations in plant tissues with a high power of resolution in time and space. The concept of growth-substance concentration as a limiting factor in plant development can thus be critically examined.
