Abstract
Seafaring is a noble, ancient and potentially dangerous occupation. The hazards of going to sea have always been great though the true toll in mortality and morbidity has frequently been underestimated (Schilling [11]). Whereas the dangers faced by ocean-going seamen are obvious, the intricacies and perils of coastal water sailing have frequently been overlooked by investigators. The problems inherent in guiding ships safely in and out of port are often related to the peculiarities of the inshore sea bed as much as to the navigability of the vessel. Thus there has been a long-standing need for mariners familiar with the locality to be on hand to assist ships’ captains in the berthing of their vessels.
