Abstract

Sea transport is as old as mankind. Over the centuries the vessels have gradually become larger and the voyages longer. In olden times, life on board was hard, the living quarters were crowded and primitive and the travellers were exposed to wind and weather. The staple food and water supply soon became insufficient on long voyages and the work was physically hard. The accident, disease and death rates were high. Therefore, work at sea was naturally accepted as a male occupation and not suited to females.
