Abstract
The Dreadnought Seamen’s Hospital in the Greenwich district of London is the main centre in the United Kingdom for the treatment of seafarers of all nationalities. The orthopaedic department plays an important part in the hospital function and it offers an ideal opportunity to study the pattern of orthopaedic diseases which affect seafarers. In this respect the hospital work is augmented by receiving orthopaedic patients who cannot spend time on the waiting list at other hospitals or who have been repatriated following illness or injury abroad.
