The Occurrence, Frequency and Aetiology of Diseases and Trauma Among Seamen

  • Chapter

Abstract

Modern technology enables ships to sail at high speed and thus pass through different climatic zones within a very short time. The consequent rapid climatic changes may affect the physical and mental health of seamen considerably. Sudden temperature changes, combined with more or less high degrees of air humidity, wind, rain, fog, strong solar radiation and other macroclimatic factors, have a greater effect on board seagoing vessels than elsewhere. In spite of all the technical facilities, the macroclimate also has a big influence on the microclimate on board. Seamen work and live on board within a most restricted space and with an almost isolated environment. When there are extremely high exterior temperatures and humidity, the microclimate on board, particularly in the engine rooms of older ships, is adversely affected. Also, climatic conditions in the living quarters of those ships without (or with insufficient) air conditioning lead to a considerable reduction of the recuperative capacity of crew members. This may also happen on board modern ships with efficient air conditioning under extreme macroclimatic conditions.
