Part of the book series: Advances in Neurosurgery ((NEURO,volume 12))

Abstract

No medical treatment is free of risks for the patient. During anesthesia one has to take into account an overall incidence of 6.5% disturbances of the anesthetic procedure (Table 1); however, permanent damage occurs only in a very low percentage (9). The most severe complication of anesthesia — death on the table — has been quoted over many years at 0.02%, even when considering emergency cases. This is one in every 5.000 anesthetics —, although the. indication for an operation has been extended constantly (2, 3, 7, 9).
