Abstract

Several factors must be considered before a decision can be made regarding the treatment of brain metastases. The primary decision, concerns a restriction to symptomatic measures for the alleviation of pain or the treatment of neurological deficits. This may be achieved effectively by osmotic therapy or by giving steroids, but as a rule the effect is only briefly (11). In one patient with a very advanced metasta-tic tumor which does not respond to a systemic therapy, it is better as a rule to dispense with the treatment of brain metastases. Since the chemotherapy of brain metastases is usually only palliative, the quality of the life prolonged by therapy must be given special attention when using such preparations.
