Zusammenfassung
In the final analysis, every disease is due to some derangement of metabolism. Therefore, in the peripheral nervous system, the neuronal-axonal degenerations and the demyelinating conditions both are due to metabolic derangement. This paper will concentrate on the pathophysiological mechanisms of degeneration of neurons (neuronopathies) and axons (axonopathies) in the peripheral nervous system, and will be illustrated by recent studies in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other motoneuron degenerations by my research group.
