Abstract
The sequence of biochemical and morphological events that characterize the cellular pathway leading from the diploid spermatogonia to mature haploid sperm represents one of the most dramatic differentiation pathways in biology. Table 1 illustrates some of the reporductive tract events within this differentiation pathway that can be modified by environmental agents. Some of the specific events underlying sperm maturation currently under investigation in this laboratory include studies on macromolecular synthesis, meiosis, exchange of nuclear histones for protamines, disulfide bonding and sperm head shaping as they are influenced by mutagens and other environmental factors.
