Abstract

On the 100 my time scale we are able-to identify changes in sea level and dramatic changes in the percentages of newly formed rock types. Equally important are phenomena which demonstrably do not exhibit changes on this time scale: examples are the major element compositions of continental tholeiites and of calc-alkaline plutonic rocks. Some problems arising from these observations seem solvable with additional work, but we wish to express our frustration with the realization that other problems cannot be solved with existing techniques.
