Today information is often used to increase the probability of survival. Some thousands of years ago, it was perhaps needed to recognize a beast early enough to escape; today it is needed in many cases for collision avoidance. Information is only useful when it is available in sufficient time for a helpful reaction; that means sufficient to avoid collision. The range Re to detect an obstacle must be greater than the distance Rm hat is needed for collision avoidance

. Rm depends on the velocity v and the time tr needed for reaction. If we say in a simplified way Rm = v tr, then the necessary value of Re increases with growing velocity v.
