Different Signalling Systems Control the Initiation of DNA Replication in Cultured Animal Cells

Abstract

One of the most fascinating problems of modern biology not yet completely understood is how living organisms replicate their genetic material (DNA) and divide in response to changes in the extracellular environment (1–3). It is generally accepted that in mammalian cells in vivo and in vitro the frequency of cell replication is controlled by the intrinsic requirements of specific organs and by a delicate balance between a variety of mitogens, ions, nutrients and cellular inhibitors present in the intercellular milieu (2,3).
