Abstract

In Japan, education and training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) began with expired-air resuscitation and external cardiac compression and has rapidly progressed. However, the contents and systems of training were not standardized and varied with each leader. In 1978 “Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation” was edited by the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine, giving the principles and guidelines of basic life support and advanced life support and standardizing the content of training programs; I was a member of the editorial committee.
