Structure and Function of Crossed and Uncrossed Pathways to the Inferior Colliculus in the Rat

HEARING — Physiological Bases and Psychophysics

Abstract

The relatively large nucleus within the auditory pathway in mammals, the inferior colliculus (IC), represents a unique auditory structure which apparently not only plays a role of a relay station but serves as an important integrating centre. The stream of information emerging from several nuclei lying lower in the auditory pathway, is funneled to the IC and transmitted to the cortex through a single channel via the medial geniculate body. The close connection of the IC with the superior colliculi, an intriguing centre for representation of the external world in the mammalian brain indicates the important role of the IC in spatial hearing.
