Abstract
The goal of a mathematical model is to express a hypothesis for understanding natural phenomena in such a manner that assumptions are stated explicitly and quantitative predictions can be evaluated for measureable phenomena. The value of a particular model is generally related to the number of phenomena that are successfully described within a small set of assumptions, the degree to which the assumptions are consistent with fundamental physical principles, and the degree to which the model captures the current understanding of the field.
