Abstract
Forensic chemistry consists of chemistry in relation to the administration of justice; i.e. forensic chemistry is concerned with the processing of disputed questions of fact in criminal, civil and insurance law, which can be clarified by the application of chemical methods and knowledge. Depending on the speciality forensic chemistry is a branch of scientific criminology or of forensic toxicology. Purely analytical methods, particularly in the field of trace analysis and materials science are to the forefront in scientific criminology. Typical examples are the comparative investigations of confiscated addictive drugs to determine their origins or the investigation and classification of traces of paint after a traffic accident. In contrast it is the province of forensic toxicology, to give evidence concerning the effects of substances (poisons) on men and more rarely on animals in disputed court cases. Forensic toxicology for its part is a portion of forensic medicine alongside forensic pathology, morphology, psychiatry and serology.
