Plateau-Uplift of the Rhenish Massif - Introductory Remarks

  • Conference paper
Plateau Uplift

Abstract

The plateau uplift of the Rhenish Massif in the Federal Republic of Germany was the object of a multi-disciplinary research program which started in 1976. The program comprised geological, geophysical, geodetic, petrological, geochemical, geomorphologic, and age-dating surveys together with attempts to model the uplift numerically. This introduction summarises the problems of plateau uplift of the Rhenish Massif as they appeared at the beginning and during the starting phase of the research program. Special emphasis is placed on the following subjects: the Rhenish Massif in the foreland of the Alpine collision front and its relation to the tectonics in the Upper Rhine Graben and the graben of the Lower Rhenish Embayment; shear heating vs. hot spot hypothesis; interaction between uplift, rifting, volcanism and mantle heterogeneities, asymmetries of plateau uplift west and east of the Rhine.
