Abstract
For the past 20 years, the surgical treatment of simple bone cysts has been undisputed. The need for more radical surgery, however, than curettage and grafting through a small opening of the cystic wall has arisen to ~educe the incidence of recurrences. Regardless of the type of surgical procedure performed, the surgeon is faced with potential problems such as infections, growth plate injury, postoperative pathologic fractures, prolonged immobilization, and hospitalization. In 1974, Scaglietti, on the basis of a brilliant clinical experiment, suggested local injections of methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) for the treatment of simple bone cysts. The procedure of MPA injection is technically simple, can be done on an outpatient basis, and requires no immobilization of the involved extremity.
