Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify the origin of the intracranial exponential pressure-volume curve observed in vivo. Pressure-flow properties of a Starling resistor in a rigid container were investigated. A Starling resistor is a collapsible tube in which the pressure external to the tube exceeds the outflow pressure. The basis for this study was the work by several investigators (Yada et al. 1973, Nakagawa et al. 1974, Portnoy et al. 1982) who have shown that the cerebral vascular bed acts as a Starling resistor, and Löfgren’s (Löfgren 1973) model of the cerebral vascular bed as a series circuit consisting of an inflow resistor corresponding to resistance vessels and an outflow resistor corresponding to the collapsible veins.
