Accurate Intracranial Pressure Monitoring

  • Conference paper

Abstract

The use of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in clinical neurosurgery has greatly facilitated the management of neurosurgical patients. Many institutions have become disenchanted with ICP monitoring, however, because of difficulties with inaccurate recordings. These difficulties arise from the lack of recognition and understanding of microleaks and calibration problems. Whether ICP is monitored from the ventricular or subarachnoid space, the following four principles are critical in evaluating any ICP monitoring system and in ensuring that correct values are obtained in all conditions.
