Clinical Diagnosis

  • Chapter

Abstract

Clinical studies of early esophageal carcinoma in high-incidence areas in China during the past two decades have shown that approximately 90% of patients have mild but definite complaints related to deglutition. The most common are retrosternal discomfort or pain and senses of friction, burning, or slow passage during swallowing of food. These symptoms unsually come and go for months or even years, causing the patient no great concern until they become increasingly consistent and severe. They appear only on deglutition and are more marked when the food is coarse or hastily eaten.
