Abstract
Approaches to carcinogenesis are of supreme importance in the strategy of prevention and treatment of esophageal cancer. Our understanding of this process is still limited, but there has been encouraging progress during recent years. Investigations in high-incidence areas, improvements in the technology used in detection of carcinogens and their adducts, advances in organ and cell culture of epithelial cells, studies on the metabolism of carcinogens in tissues, etc. have afforded a lot of valuable data on different aspects. Much evidence suggests that esophageal carcinogenesis is most likely a multifactorial and multistage process.
