Abstract
Surgery and radiotherapy are the two chief methods of treatment for carcinoma of the esophagus. As most patients are found to have already advanced lesions when first seen in the clinic, they are not eligible for operation, but can only be treated by irradiation or other palliative measures. Among 9104 patients admitted for treatment from 1958 to 1980 to the Cancer Institute of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, only 1798 (19.8%) were operated upon; 947 were treated by surgery alone, 692 by preoperative irradiation and surgery, and 159 by surgery and postoperative irradiation. Of the remaining patients, 6501 (71.4%) were treated by irradiation and 805 (8.8%) by chemotherapy and/or other palliative measures. These figures show that a considerable proportion of patients are at some time irradiated; consequently, the importance of improving the techniques and results of radiotherapy cannot be overemphasized.
