Abstract
Interferons (IFNs) are a family of inducible proteins which exert potent biologic effects on target cells. These proteins render animal cells resistant to infection by a wide spectrum of viruses, inhibit cell proliferation and exert immunomodulatory effects on a variety of target cells (Sehgal et al. 1982). IFNs can be induced in a large number of different animal species (Stewart 1979) and usually exert their effects on cells of homologous species. However, certain IFNs are also active on cells of heterologous species (Stewart 1979).
