Comparative Biologic Activities of Human Interferons

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 71))

Abstract

Interferons have been shown to have a number of biologic activities other than the antiviral properties which first led to their discovery. Since the identification of interferon by Issacs and Lindenmann in 1957, numerous studies have been directed toward understanding the multiple effects these proteins have on cellular functions and immune responses (Stewart 1981). Although virus-induced interferons, the classical interferons, have been studied more extensively, primarily because of their availability, it is now well recognized that interferon induced as a result of immune reactions is also a potent antiviral agent (Green et al. 1969). This immune interferon first described by Wheelock (1965) also has antiproliferative and immunoregulatory activities. However, it differs in its stability at low pH and the conditions required to induce it.
