Traumatology of the Skull Base

Abstract

In ancient centuries blunt trauma of the skull base generally offered no indications for surgical interventions. Only if signs of intracranial pressure were observed, cranial trepanations were performed in order to remove extra- or intradural hematomas. Even during the First World War neurosurgery for such lesions was confined to the treatment of open fractures or gun shot trauma.
