Abstract
Interest in mineral cycling and loss in terrestrial ecosystems has intensified in recent years. Impressively detailed studies of a number of temperate zone ecosystems have been completed (e.g., Rapp 1971; Likens et al. 1977; Bormann and Likens 1979; Edmonds 1982). The approach is currently being extended to tropical (Bernhard-Reversat 1977; Herrera and Jordan 1981) and boreal (Van Cleve and Viereck 1981) ecosystems with great success. These studies have focused primarily upon relatively natural ecosystems, but some studies include experimental and comparative examinations of managed ecosystems (Bormann and Likens 1979; Swank and Waide 1980).
