Depositional Models for the Carboniferous Flysch of the Eastern Rheinisches Schiefergebirge

Intracontinental Fold Belts

Abstract

This contribution is concerned with early synorogenic deposits of the Variscan basin, that is, those sediments which were deposited in the relatively rapidly evolving, tectonically active troughs during the terminal phase of the development of the orogenic basin. They are derived from and then incorporated into newly influential source terrains. They were deformed at shallow or superficial crustal levels and are primary record of the orogeny.
