Experimental Investigation of the Stability Conditions of a Penological Significant Calc-Silicate Assemblage Observed in Originally Marly Rocks in the Kuiseb Formation of the Damara Orogen

Abstract

Calc-silicate assemblages observed by Puhan & Hoffer in originally marly rocks in the predominantly siliciclastic Kuiseb Formation of the Damara Orogen include the petrological significant subassemblage

$$\begin{gathered} \text{zoisite}/\text{epidote}\, + \,\text{plagioclase}\, + \,\text{calcite}. \hfill \\ \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$

The \(\text{P} - \text{T} - \text{X}_{\text{CO}_2 } \) stability conditions of this assemblage are determined at total pressures up to 8000 bars, and the effect of the albite component of plagioclase and of the pistacite component of zoisite/epidote is considered at 5000 bars total pressure. Assuming pressures of formation deduced from other rock systems the zoisite-anorthite-calcite equilibrium data can be used in combination with other pertinent experimental data to estimate the temperature of formation of the observed assemblages and the composition of the now-missing fluid phase.
