Metamorphism of Siliceous Dolomites of the Central and Southern Part of the Damara Orogen

  • Conference paper

Abstract

The P-T conditions of metamorphism in the southern and central Damara Orogen are determined by correlations of mineral assemblages in siliceous dolomites with corresponding experimentally investigated reaction equilibria. The temperature peak reached during metamorphism was assessed by application of the dolomite-calcite solvus geothermometer.

The metamorphic conditions deduced for the eastern rim of the Rietfontein Inlier in the southern part of the orogen are about 560°C with corresponding total pressure from 5 to 8 kb.

For the central part of the orogen more data are available. Going from Karibib southwestwards to Swakopmund, the temperature of metamorphism along the present-day surface increases from 555°C to 645°C. The temperature of metamorphism permits an estimate of P-total for a zone where the univariant assemblages forsterite + diopside + tremolite + dolomite + calcite occurs. During the formation of the above assemblage P-total ranges from 2.6 kb northeast of the Khan/Swakop confluence to about 3.4 near Swakopmund.

These data are valid for the temperature culmination during metamorphism, this means that they represent one point on the P-T-path of metamorphism.

There are no indications that the Damara metamorphism consists of more than one event. This does not exclude stops during the evolution of the P-T-conditions.
