Regional Isostatic Model for Vertical Movements in the Shelf Area of the Rhenohercynian Geosyncline

Abstract

Geological features in the shelf area of the Phenohercynian geosyncline show a significant correlation between sedimentation and crustal subsidence. These synsedimentary crustal movements may be connected with phase transformations in the crust or upper mantle or with regional isostatic movements. A specific regional isostatic model is presented to explain the existence of rises on the basinward side of Devonian and Carboniferous shelf margins, i.e. the rise of the basis of the Carboniferous limestone between Wachtendonk and Patingen and the flexure and slope in the Herzkamp syncline.
