Abstract
Towards the close of the 19th century there began a rapid increase in scientific discoveries in many different fields and included among these were the contributions from Norwegian auroral physicists. At this time knowledge about the northern light had been obtained to an overwhelming extent from visual observations. In order to better understand the problems facing these auroral physicists, we digress momentarily to discuss the visual aurora.
