Abstract

The purpose of this contribution is threefold: (1) to review psychological studies of temporal structure in the perception of English speech, (2) to present some new experimental evidence which suggests that the perceptually crucial feature of temporal structure is its predictability, and (3) to discuss recent linguistic models of prosodic organisation in the light of that evidence.
