Allergy of the Respiratory Tract to Low Molecular Weight Chemical Agents

  • Chapter
Book cover Allergic Reactions to Drugs

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 63))

Abstract

Allergy to small chemical molecules is exemplified by the respiratory allergic disorders they cause, mainly in relation to occupation. Such haptenic agents present many problems familiar in allergy to drugs, such as the nature and role of the carrier molecules, the difficulties in demonstrating antibodies, and the highly reactive nature of some of these substances. The latter may lead to non-specific combination with immunoglobulins or may combine with protein in such a way as to render the specific antigenic determinants inaccessible in test procedures.
