Abstract

It has been shown that permeability disorders occurring in the early phase of vascular injury play a decisive role in the development of mural lesions. Deposition of plasma in the vascular wall was demonstrated by various tracer substances in experimental hypertension (Jellinek et al. 1969; Olsen 1969; Giacomelli et al. 1970; Hüttner et al. 1970) and hypercholesterolemia (Adams et al. 1968; Gore et al. 1972; Veress et al. 1972) but it has been supposed to play a part in the development of hypoxic vascular lesions as well (Astrup et al. 1967; Kjeldsen et al. 1968). Systemic hypoxia may, in itself, lead to the development of arteriosclerotic lesions (Garbarsch et al. 1969; Heiin et al. 1969). And it enhances atheromatosis in cholesterol-fed animals (Astrup et al. 1967; Kjeldsen et al. 1968). A temporary hypoxia causes irreversible changes associated with a severe permeability disorder in muscular-type small arteries (Kerényi and Jellinek 1972).
