Das Colon ist Aufbereitungs- und Ausscheidungsorgan nichtresorbierter Nahrungsbestandteile, die zusammen mit intestinalen Sekreten, desquamierten Epithelien und Bestandteilen der Darmflora die Faeces bilden. Die funktionelle Charakteristik ist bestimmt durch die Resorption, die Sekretion, die Motilität und durch die immunologische Kontaktnahme.
