Zusammenfassung
Die Neuronen sind als funktionstragende Einheiten des Nervensystems, die höchstdifferenzierten Zellen überhaupt. Als Preis dafür haben sie die Teilungsfähigkeit verloren. Teleologisch gesehen kann man sogar von einer Notwendigkeit des Teilungsverlustes sprechen [34]. Die Lernprozesse und das Gedächtnis verdanken wir komplizierten Speicherungsmechanismen und der Fähigkeit der Neuronen, durch Synapsen eine unendliche Zahl von Kombinationen systematisch zu knüpfen. Wenn die Neuronen teilungsfähig wären, würde das ganze System, das der geordneten Hirnaktivität zugrunde liegt, entweder nie zustande kommen oder in ein Chaos geraten. Diese Unfähigkeit der Neuronen, sich durch Teilung zahlenmäßig zu vermehren oder konstant zu bleiben, führt dazu, daß das menschliche Gehirn täglich etwa 100000 Neuronen ersatzlos verliert. Das ist beim ersten Blick eine beängstigende Zahl, der Gesamtverlust ist jedoch (bei einer Ausgangszahl von etwa 14 Milliarden Neuronen) mäßig.
