Zusammenfassung
Die Entwicklung der experimentellen Gerontologie in Deutschland ist ohne Zweifel den hervorragenden Arbeiten von Max Bürger und seiner Schule zu verdanken. Er betonte stets, daß die theoretische Grundlagenforschung für das Verständnis klinischer Veränderungen beim Alterungsvorgang unbedingt erforderlich sei. Undenkbar ist es, von experimenteller Gerontologie zu sprechen, ohne die großen Verdienste von Fritz Verzar herauszustellen. Fritz Verzar organisierte 1955 in Basel ein Internationales Europäisches Symposion über „Experimentelle Altersforschung“. Auf dem Boden der Ergebnisse dieses Symposions wurde die Gründung der Zeitschrift „Gerontologia“ ermöglicht. 1957 folgte in Basel die Gründung des „Instituts für Experimentelle Gerontologie“, dem Fritz Verzar bis zu seinem Ausscheiden als Direktor vorstand. Unter der Leitung von D. F. Tschebotarew wird seit 1966 in Kiew in einem Institut für Experimentelle Gerontologie, seit 1968 in Baltimore unter Leitung von N. W.Shock sowie seit 1980 an der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg im Institut für Gerontologie Grundlagenforschung des Alterns betrieben. In zahlreichen Instituten in den USA, England und Frankreich ist die experimentelle Gerontologie als Schwerpunkt berücksichtigt.
