Abstract

Recent investigations into the relative stability of phenetic and cladistic classifications have emphasized taxonomic congruence of classifications based on different subsuites of characters. Studies claiming higher stability (congruence) for cladistic classifications (Mickevich, 1978, 1980; Schuh and Polhemus, 1980; Schuh and Farris, 1981) have been criticized as faulty in design (Rohlf and Sokal, 1980, 1981; Sokal and Rohlf, 1981a) and in execution (Colless, 1980, 1981; Rohlf, Colless and Hart, 1982; Sokal and Rohlf, 1981a). These authors cannot confirm the results favoring cladistic classifications. This study analyzes a new data set employing recently suggested approaches.
