Abstract

Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. is a cosmopolitan species which constitutes a polyploid complex, with two series, one euploid and one aneuploid. The euploid series is: 2n=3x=36, 2n=4x=48, (5x--unknown), 2n=6x=72, 2n=7x=84, 2n=8x=96. The aneuploid series is centered around 2n=48 (42, 44, 46, 49, 50, 51, 52, 54). P. australis is highly polymorphic in nature, and the polymorphism is independent of chromosome numbers. But these plants become more uniform when cultivated under the same conditions (Gorenflot R. and Sanei-Chariat Panahi M., 1979).
