Abstract
This is a review of the knowledge on one of the messenger systems involved in the regulation of secretion of glucagon. The messengers in this system are hormones, and, by definition, they are blood borne and reach their target, namely the A-cells of pancreatic islets, through the vascular system. The purpose of this hormonal messenger system is multiple. (1) The availability of hormones that are involved in the regulation of certain metabolic events would be coordinated by each influencing the secretion of the other (Sects. B-E). (2) Hormones which are secreted by cells in the intestinal endothelium could alert the glucagon-producing cell to the approaching work load, namely the assimilation of ingested nutrients (Sect. F). (3) High level coordination of metabolic events would be achieved by the central nervous system via the humoral route (Sects. G, H).
