Abstract

Despite a growing literature, the role of ions in the control of glucagon release remains a controversial subject. Indeed, for most ions so far investigated, both positive and negative influences upon glucagon release have been reported. In our view, one of the reasons which could explain some of these contradictory findings is that ion-induced changes in glucagon release might depend critically on the nutritional environment offered to the A-cell. For instance, it should be remembered that glucose and arginine, i. e., two widely used stimuli for the endocrine pancreas, usually modulate the secretory activity of the A-cell in opposite directions, whereas in the B-cell they may act synergistically. It is thus conceivable that the ionic control of glucagon release differs in relation to the functional response evoked by distinct stimuli. However, and although alternative hypotheses will be duly taken into account, it is with such a scheme in mind that we have undertaken the present chapter.
