Abstract

It has been speculated that small increments of insulin in the portal blood, counterbalanced by small increases in glucagon, could result in an enhanced protein anabolic effect with minimal shifts in glucose homeostasis. Such a hypothesis makes it reasonable to postulate that glucagon itself might be under pituitary control (see also Chap. 29).
